CANOES

HELLMAN makes excellent lightweight canoes. The designs combine seaworthiness, stability and efficiency in a shape that is also appealing to the eye.

The PROSPECTOR is one of the best canoes for someone who likes to go the distance. It is fast and efficient, while able to stand up to the roughest of sea conditions you would care to endure. On overnights or day trips, you will continually be pleased by the feeling of its responsiveness to your paddle strokes.

The SLOCAN is the Prospector's heavy hauler cousin. It is the same length, 2" (inches) wider, with the same general characteristics. The difference is that it can pack more in a comfortable way. If you are a family group with two kids and a dog, this canoe will carry all of you safely with no fuss and little compromise in efficiency. When you need to pick it up to load it on the car at the end of the trip, the duralite's 64 lbs will make your job feel do-able in spite of being a bit tuckered out. If you went for the kevlar, weight is only 55 lbs.

The SCOUT is the solo paddler's play boat. you can take it anywhere, and if you want a friend to join you, the canoe has enough capacity for two. It is agile, responsive, and so nimble feeling, that you will find yourself taking it into moving water just to play around in the eddies and standing waves. Definitely not a one-trick pony, it is a pleasure to own for its versatility. In kevlar it is only 42 lbs, duralite 49 lbs.

The KOOTENAY takes a different turn in terms of hull shape. I think of it as a good general purpose canoe with a lot of forgiving characteristics for the beginning canoer. It is good for family paddling, or fishing, or just poking along the shoreline on a sunny day.

The QUETICO 16 is like a smaller Kootenay. Not as deep, not as long, but very well behaved for just peaceful paddleing in sheltered waters. Tracking and stability are pleasing, and picking it up is surprising.

KAYAKS

ATLANTIS KAYAKS make some of the best kayaks out there in terms of workmanship and design. Robin's attention to every detail, at both the design level as well as production, make these kayaks long term keepers.

The SPARTAN greenlandic style or skeg design earned my interest and respect for its easy going manner in waves and wind. I am always surprised when the wind creeps up to 20 – 25 knots that it is still easy to control and just slides along parting the waves. The skeg is there and available but seldom have I needed it in oncoming wind. Running downwind is another matter. Most skeg kayaks are at their worst when the wind is from behind, their skegs simply not able to counter the wind effect. The Spartan comes into it's own going downwind. The skeg really does it's job well and the boat easily holds it's heading. This is not because it has a large over-sized skeg. It can be attributed to the balance of the hull in the wind. (In strong winds, you will also be having a great time surfing the swells.)

The best part is the over-all efficiency of the hull. Anyone who has spent any time pushing kayak hulls at their limit knows what the "wall" feels like when you reach that point. For a sea kayak that you can load up with gear for multi-day trips and still enjoy this kind of performance, it becomes a kayak you like more each time you paddle it.

The Spartan is available in two volumes, and four different cockpit fits, fitting people ranging from 5 ft, something to 6 ft. something. I can't put a weight range to it. The forward bulkhead can be positioned over a six inch range if you want more space forward, and leg length permits.

To get the most out of the space aft, I recommend leaving out the dividing bulkhead between hatches, and installing a day hatch bag. This becomes an asset as you can use the bag up to about 25 litres or collapse it completely when you want to fill the space from the aft hatch with large items. The bag itself is the waterproof separation for those occasions when you want to open the day hatch at sea without risking flooding the whole back end.

Cockpit fit can be enhanced by adding padding to the space beside the seat. We accomplish this by fitting a fabric bag under the deck beside the seat, and using shaped foam inserts inside the bag to achieve the desired hip support. The foam, accessible by a zipper, can easily be altered to suit different paddlers.

NIMBUS KAYAKS are known for finely-made, high quality composite laminates combined with some of the best hull shapes in the business. Some designs are classics which have been in production for up to 30 years. Efficient, safe, forgiving and confidence inspiring hull shapes, light weight, strong, innovative, practical for major trips but simply a pleasure for day paddles: these are words that define Nimbus kayaks. There are a range of sizes to suit all statures.

Starting at the smaller end of the spectrum:

The CYGNET is 14' 9" and suits paddlers from 4' 10" to 5' 6" up to 135 lb.

The SOLANDER is 16' 2" and looks just like a slightly larger Cygnet. It suits paddlers up to 165 lb and 5' 8"

The TELKWA SPORT is 18 3" and fits paddlers from 5' 6" and 140 lb to 6' 3" and 180lb

The TELKWA is the same length but roomier, and fits larger paddlers up to 6' 3" and 220 lb.

The TELKWA HV (High Volume) is for those folks who simply cannot find a kayak that feels comfortable, starting with crowded foot room, cramped knee room, and just too darned small. The HV fits people up to 6' 6", some 6' 7" and 260–270 lbs.

Nimbus has the same approach to doubles:

The KENAKA is 18' 3"

The HYACK is 19' 3"

The SKANA is 21' 8" and has a large centre hatch
